In plain English the answer is NO!. Slavery has been illegal here in England since the Middle Ages, but the law forbidding it in England did not stop it abroad!.

Amazing numbers of people were involved in the Slave Trade, including Oliver Cromwell, who had two slave ships built at Deptford about 3 miles from where I'm sitting now!.

The pity of it is that English law had originally operated in the 13 American Colonies, but for some reason which I do not understand, King George III gave the colonies permission to have slaves!.

How much better had he not done so and how much sooner then would the slave trade have been brought to an end!.

Britain had very little slaves, but it wasn't until the 1800's along with america that it was fully outlawed!.

The English and some Europeans used to ship supplies off to the colonies in Africa, and trade supplies and things for the slaves they captured!.

These slaves were sent to America, to work on the various plantations!. Here the slaves were sold off for profits for things like tobacco, rum and sugar, which all went back to England and Europe!.

It wasn't till the 1800's that slavery was made illegal, alongside the breakaway of America from the British Empire!.

But during this era, it wasn't uncommon for not just blacks to be sold as slaves, but also pirates to capture white people from off coasts, and to barter trade ships and the like!. I'm sure you've seen the movies however, but these also were sold off to america to work on the plantations!.

Sorry, Rachel and Ed, but you are both wrong!.
Slavery was ruled illegal in England by the courts in 1774!. There was very little, though - Lord Mansfield's judgment was just clearing up an obscure point of law!.
African slaves were never brought over to work in Britain in any significant numbers!.
Slavery was abolished in the British Empire in 1833!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
