Best Answer - Chosen by Asker:
James I
Family background: son of Mary Queen of Scots and Lord Darnley, thus heir to the throne of Scotland on his birth and an important pawn in the power games in Scotland that surrounded his mother!. He was also the great great grandson of Henry VII of England which meant he became the heir to Elizabeth, the Virgin Queen of England!.!.
So simply by inheriting the two crowns, of Scotland and England he made a major step to uniting the two countries
Although he was a Protestant, his mother's religion Catholicism, was like a potential spark to the bonfire of religious politics of Protestant England!. However, James did not protest when Elizabeth beheaded his mother!. Nevertheless, as King of England he insisted on the concept of the divine right of kIngs and thus was constantly in conflict with Parliament at a time when economically Parliament was becoming more important in the government of the country!. In 1611 he dissolved Parliament and ruled without one until 1621!. He was personally extravagant, a fairly incompetent ruler always shifting his policies and he ruled a corrupt court!. The focus on trade as a source of power and wealth led to the colonization of America which began during his reign!.
He was also a vigorous witch hunter thus encouraging the fairly horrible State murders of many women!. On the other hand he was responsible for the translation into English and publication (in 1611) of the Authorized, King James version of the Bible!. Whereas under previous English monarchs ordinary people had been tortured and murdered by the State for accessing English translations
His claim to the Divine Right to rule and his keenness on absolute power was inherited by son Charles I who continued the fight with Parliament until the English Civil War!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
