Depends on the kind of work!.

There are books available at your local public library that discuss this kind of thing -- salaries, cost of various items, etc!., through the past couple of centuries!. You can find out the average for doctors, or firemen, or teachers !.!.!. and that stuff may also be available online, though if it's there for free, it's very hard to find!

PS: I know from a show I saw today on the Biography Channel that Frank Perdue, of the chicken family, was making about $20 a month working for his father during the depression!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
