Toast was invented in the mid-1700's, in England!. Both sides of the piece/chunk of bread were basted with melted unsalted butter (they did not have margarine back then), stuck on a fork and held over an open fire until lightly browned on both sides, and served with a fruit jelly (as opposed to a meat jelly)!.

P!.S!.
Some form of "French Toast" is believed to have been taken to England from Europe, during the Norman Conquest!.
It was served, in England and Europe, by innkeeppers in place of meat dishes, as meat dishes were more expensive!.
The peasantry made it from days old bread, using beaten eggs to soften the hard bread, in order to be able to eat it!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

While the question seems so easy, a lot of what they ate, depended on where they were (location), their descent or heritage, and their socioeconomic status!.

I have a cookbook from Williamsburg and looked to find an easy recipe!. Here's one I found for Apple Tansey that is supposed to be authentic!. The cookbook is a reproduction of The Compleat Housewife: or, Accomplished Gentlewoman's Companion by E!. Smith, published in London, 1754

To make an Apple Tansey, Take three pippins, slice them round in thin slices, and fry them with butter; then beat four eggs, with six spoonfuls of cream, a little rosewater, nutmeg, and sugar; stir them together, and pour it over the apples; let it fry a little, and turn it with a pye-plate!. Garnish with lemon and sugar strew'd over it!.

The "translation" I found has different quantities, but at least the ingredients make sense!

To make the best Apple Tansey
To make an Apple Tansey!. Pare your Apples and cut them in thin round slices, then fry them in good sweet Butter, then take ten Eggs, sweet Cream, Nutmeg, Cinamon, Ginger, Sugar, with a little Rose-water, beat all these together, and poure it upon your Apples and fry it!.

Hope this helps!
