Question: Why wasn't there a compromise on slavery during the civil war!?
Best Answer - Chosen by Asker:
slavery was not the issue!. To the North it was of marginal importance (as proven by the formation of segregated military units) which became a bit more important due to propaganda issues and the increasing demand for soldiers
Mainly the north saw slavery as an opportunity to weaken the south (sponsor a rebellion and force the south to move troops to guard the interior)

to the south slavery was a major source of labour- they produced the goods (cotton) which could be exchanged for imported weapons!. So while the war lasted slavery was vital to the south (they had no one they could replace them with)

not much space for a compromiseWww@QuestionHome@Com
