Lincoln campaigned against the expansion of slavery into the western territories!. Slave states believed that when these free territories became free states, they would make the federal government more anti-slavery!. The southerners believed the federal government would take away the states' right to slavery!. The states in the deep south with the most slaves seceded first: South Carolina, Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, and Texas!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

The southerners wanted to secede from the Union because they felt that the North was taking advantage of them getting all the wealth and the power and ordering them around the north was fighting to work as a nation while the south still believed in states individual rights!. That is why states began to secede from the Union!. South Carolina was the first to leave the Union and form a new nation called the Confederate States of America!. Four months later, six other states seceded!. They were Georgia, Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Texas and Louisiana!. Later Virginia, Arkansas, North Carolina, and Tennessee joined them!. The people of these states elected Jefferson Davis as president of the Confederacy!. Maryland and Delaware also planned to seceede by they were blocked by martial law and troops were kept to make sure that they did not leave the union!.
