The Soviet Union's collapse into independent nations began when Mikhail gorbachev was elected General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union on 11 March 1985!. After years of Soviet military buildup at the expense of domestic development, economic growth was at a standstill!. Failed attempts at reform, a stagnant economy and war in Afghanistan led to a general feeling of discontent, especially in the Baltic republics and Eastern Europe!. Greater political and social freedoms created an atmosphere of open criticism of the Moscow regime!.

The arms race!.

The Soviet Union had devoted most of its resources to the arms race!. The fact is that if it had come to a war between the Warsaw Pact and Nato the Soviets would have captured all of mainland Europe and annihilated the US in a matter of days! We know that for a fact because once the wall came down NATO military intelligence wasted no time in gathering what info we could from all the bases and HQs in East Germany!. It was disturbing and revealed just how unprepared and outgunned we really were!. The big question was that having this power were they going to use it or merely continue expending the resources necessary to maintain it!? We were most fortunate that Mikhail Gorbachov was the man in power who asked this question and reached out to us to bring an end to the arms race so the nations resources could be diverted to repairing its bankrupt infrastructure and economy!. The first visible response to this was the breaking away of the warsaw pact nations followed closely by the states of the USSR!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
