In the Civil War, Grant made a demand of "unconditional and immediate surrender" against the confederate General Simon Buckner at the Battle of Donelson in February 1862!.

Buckner surrendered upwards of 12,000 men despite objecting to Grant's terms, and the name quickly stuck!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

It's not commonly known but a woman, possibly Mrs!. G!. spread a rumor and when it took hold, insisted he must live up to his reputation!.
