The Louisiana Purchase literally doubled the size of the U!.S!. overnight!. However, even President Jefferson thought that the purchase was unconstitutional, but did it anyway!. It was so out of character for him, since he was always concerned about the President becoming too powerful!.

President Polk, however, add even more territory to the U!.S!. than Jefferson did!. He added almost all of the area west of the Louisiana Purchase, under two separate acquisitions - from Canada and from Mexico!.

"Polk secured the Oregon Territory (including Washington, Oregon and Idaho), amounting to about 285,000 square miles (738,000 km2) then purchased 525,000 square miles (1,360,000 km2) through the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo that ended the Mexican–American War!."Www@QuestionHome@Com

it at once doubled the size of the country and started the westward movement that ended when the pacific ocean caused us to run out of land!. i don't believe it conflicted with Jefferson's character!. Jefferson's philosophy was to conquer without war!. he paid Napoleon for the Louisiana purchase which was just another way of moving west!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

By hugely increasing the size of the country and the scope of the federal government!. Jefferson had long been an advocate of a limitted role for the executive branch and the national government!. Now he was, in a sense, king of Louisiana!. Www@QuestionHome@Com
