Question: Why and how was there a significant upsurge in popular resistance to apartheid from the mid-1970s!?
Best Answer - Chosen by Asker:
people globally became more aware of the evils of apartheid with the advance of tv media, international newspaper correspondence and radio!. the 1960's and 70's had seen youth culture explode, and with it an increase in opposition to the Vietnam war/Biafra, etc, etc!. It became popular to oppose, actively or otherwise, perceived state repression!. The Civil Rights movement in the West meant that black people were no longer regarded as sub human, and the logical extension of this is to apply such ethics overseas as well!. As US/UK blacks grew more educated and aware, they turned their attention to Africa, with ordinary people boycotting S!. African corporations, and writers and academics drawing attention to the injustices there!.
We were also forunate to have people like Steve Biko active and writing in that era!.
