Question: Women tortured and raped during civil rights era!?

I heard that around civil rights era
some women who demanded liberty and rights to vote
were abducted by some kind of men who opposed women rights
and often were tortured and even were raped!.
(They were placed in some bunk or underground basement or cellar!.!.
almost no one knew where the women were and
they were chained and were in harsh condition,
with scarce food and water!.)

Is it really true!? if it is, can you explain it further and in detail!?
I really want to know about it!.!.
thanks!.

It's true!.

Women who wished for the right to vote were treated very badly by those who wanted to oppress them!.

One of the most awful events was "The Night of Terror" that occured on Novemver 15, 1917!.

"The women were innocent and defenseless!. And by the end of the night, they were barely alive!. Forty prison guards wielding clubs and their warden’s blessing went on a rampage against the 33 women wrongly convicted of “obstructing sidewalk traffic!.”

They beat Lucy Burn, chained her hands to the cell bars above her head and left her hanging for the night, bleeding and gasping for air!. They hurled Dora Lewis into a dark cell, smashed her head against an iron bed and knocked her out cold Her cell mate, Alice Cosu, thought Lewis was dead and suffered a heart attack!. Additional affidavits describe the guards grabbing, dragging, beating, choking, slamming, pinching, twisting and kicking the women!."

HBO made a movie about this terrible event called "Iron Jawed Angels" that's available on DVD!.

I've never seen it, but HBO usually does wonderful films!.

Im assuming you mean the womans sufferage era, not the civil rights movement, too far differnt events, A lot of abuses were committed on woman that openly supported the right to vote, own property fair wages etc of the womans rights movement, many were arrested, accussed of all sorts of offenses usualy either being a group of prostitutes or lesbians, often beaten and intimidated by men and law enforcement!.However I dont know or find anything specifically about keeping any in like you describe, usually they were jailed harrassed and released!.!. some openly pro sufferagettes were raped by men or groups of men "to show them their place as women" and as a intimidatioon tactic ( the same thing happend to quite a few open lesbians or suspected ones in that era) I just dont know of the concentrated intentional effort your describing!.Rape is usually about power (not sex or mostly not) and was often used (rape or the threat of rape) to scare woman into submission!.!.thruout the voting and labour movement era!.!.women trying to enter what was veiwed as "a mans world" were often abused in ways to "remind them their women and their subjagation to men"!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

The Civil Rights Era dealt occurred in the 1950s and 1960s when African Americans fought for and won the right to equal treatment in America!.

I think you mean to ask about the Women's Suffrage Movement!. This is the time when women demanded and won the right to vote!.

I don't remember learning about any women raped or held underground during this time, and I could find no reference to it on the web!. Www@QuestionHome@Com
