Question: What if the ussr and china went to war with each other in 1969!?
im pondering this scenario for a game that im trying to develop!. i'd be happy if people can contribute their ideas on this topic!. The points that i'm particularly interested on are:
1!. what the US/Western reaction could be!.
2!. if both countries use nuclear weapons on each other: what would the aftermath be!?
3!. could the nations neighboring both countries be sucked into the war!?

i'd really appreciate any help on this!. thanks in advance!.

Well, you might look at the little war that they had in the late 50s/ early 60s!. The Russians used experimental weapons on the Chinese and so many Chinese died that they had to explain it to the world that "a famine" killed the TRAIN LOADS of people that were seen moving across the country by our spy planes!. (a famine doesn't "happen" in just a couple of weeks)

Even into the late 1960s, the Soviets could have easily kept the Chinese air force from penetrating into their airspace with their nuclear bomb, and the Chinese had no missiles to speak of!. The Soviets could have then given up all the land necessary to set up "killing fields" to kill off any and all of the Chinese who invaded!. They would simply wait for several million invaders to enter and nuke them with missiles!. Since the Chinese missile systems were all but nonexistent at that time they wouldn't have been able to retaliate!.

As for the neighboring countries, they would have just been trampled on as the Chinese or the Soviets wished!. The Communists never cared about any other countries, only killing and conquering!.

The West!.!.!.!. like idiots may have gotten into the mix as the balance went one way or another!. Hopefully we would have stayed out until it looked like the two giants had almost wiped each other out!. We had already made the mistake of SAVING the Communists during WWII, and look what happened!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

China and Russia knew that an escalating conflict would lead to a real war, both did not want such an event!. The skirmishes and the harsh talk was acceptable to a point, which both sides felt the conflict could be contained!. It did push China to engage in talks with the United States and Nixon's historic visit to China!.

Today, China and Russia are closer than ever before!. Chinese space exploration relies heavily on Russian technology and training!. Russia also sees China as a reliable customer for it's oil and gas products!.
The situation of 1969 will probably not occur again, since both nations are moving forward together to become the new capitalist powers of the world!.
