Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: Yes, the Russians desired free elections!.Www@QuestionHome@Com During the war, some of the harsher policies of the Stalinist regime were loosened!. For example, persecution of the Church was halted and people were allowed to worship and pray for victory!. Censorship of writing and the arts was also relaxed!. There were also rumors amongst the rural population that collectivization would be abolished after the enemy was defeated and that the civil rights guaranteed under the Soviet Constitution (things like freedom of religion, freedom of expression, right to peaceful protest, etc) would finally be enforced!. Unfortunately, once the war was won Stalin instituted a crackdown to ensure the country stayed locked under his control!.Www@QuestionHome@Com No, the people of Russia were too fearful and scared of their leader, Stalin, to even think of wanting to organize a democracy!. To illustrate this, there's an Elijah Wood movie called 'Everything's Illuminated', about a young Jewish man in the nineties who visits the Ukraine, to discover his roots!. He runs into his old grandmother, on an isolated farm, who asks in fear if Stalin is still alive!.!.!.Maybe a bit of an exxageration, but not too far off the mark!.Www@QuestionHome@Com After WWII people of USSR had not any other option as rebuilt he country and also had not any other party to elect from as Communist Party of USSR also there were repressions and GULAG where people was sent for a simple joke, or stealing food, or not working!.!.!.Www@QuestionHome@Com Well obviously they weren't thrilled with Stalin, or communism!.
