It is arguable how he exactly killed himself, but the generally accepted story was death by cyanide poison and a gunshot to the head!.

Hitler was likely mentally unstable near the end of the war, commanding armies that were already dead, and he was determined that Berlin would be defended from the Soviets (The Germans were outnumbered 15 to 1)
