Babbage invented a mechanical computer, made of gears and stuff!.

If you mean the first -electronic- computer, it was called Colossus!. It was developed at Bletchley Park, in Buckinghamshire, during WWII for the purpose of decoding intercepted German messages!.

These early computers were developed simultaneously in the US and England during WWII!. The American one was built to calculate tables of gun trajectories!. The British one was built to decode coded messages!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
