Best Answer - Chosen by Asker:
Operation Torch was the invasion of Algeria and Lybia in September 1942 by U!.S!. British and Free French forces!.

The British had been fighting the German and Italian forces in North Africa since 1940 and these great land battles in the deserts had swung back and forth over vast tracts of land, neither side being able to deliver a knock out blow despite battles such as El-Alemein and Tobruk!. The Two famous adversaries Montgomery and Rommel made their name in the desert as did the famous British 8th Army (Desert Rats) and the German Africa Korps!.

The fighting centered on Eygpt in the east right across to central North Africa (Lybia), but with the U!.S!. entry into the war, and because Stalin was demanding a '2nd front' to relieve Russian troops it was decided to land an army in Western North Africa (Algeria and Morroco) which is roughly below Spain and hundreds of miles behind German/Italian forces, and bring a swift conclusion to the fighting!.

It was the U!.S!. army's first 'blooding' in the European theatre and sad to say they did not perform well!. Throwing green troops in against a battle hardened enemy like the Africa Koprs was disasterous, after a promising start whilst Rommel rushed his troops to meet them, the U!.S!. were defeated in several battles and whole regiments were taken prisoner with hardly a shot being fired!. Rommel became contemptuous of the U!.S!. Armies fighting abilities and he would later underestimate them when they became battle hardened!. The General in charge of American troops, Lloyd Fredendall was dismissed for incompetence, many other officers where demoted, but Genreal's such as Patton and Bradley were promoted and the U!.S!. army learned some valuable lessons!.

Terrible weather and superiority in equipment eventually saw the German and Italian Troops defeated, but it was a bloody lesson for this U!.S!. army which would spend the rest of the war fighting their way through Sicily and Italy in some of the worst continual fighting in the European theatreWww@QuestionHome@Com

Many of the preceding answers contain mistakes; so, be careful!.

Yes, the US military was involved in Africa during WW2!. They were involved in North Africa primarily along the western coast from Algeria to Tunisia!.

You're asking about the US military, and the US didn't get involved in World War 2 until December of 1941; so, the answer claiming the US was involved as early as 1940 is wrong!. I suspect he is confusing the British military with the American military!.

Similarly, the British fought at El Alamien, not the Americans!. (Britain's Field Marshall Bernard Law Montgomery became famous largely due to that battle!.) So, there is another mistake!.

Egypt was a British colony and it was the British who were active in Egypt, as opposed to the Americans!. There too is a mistake in the answers of others!. Again they confuse America and Britain!.

Field Marshall Erwin Rommel, "The Desert Fox," led the Afrika Corps; so, the first answer is correct to mention the "Desert Fox," but it must be remembered that he was a German (not a US) military leader!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Yes it was called the North African Campaign and ook place in the North African desert from June 1940 to May 1943!. It included campaigns fought in the Libyan and Egyptian deserts (Western Desert Campaign) and in Morocco, Algeria (Operation Torch) and Tunisia (Tunisia Campaign)!. From here they were able to pop up to Italy and liberate that Country also!.!.

Man Hat, yes, but not as many as the Brits!. America really put in large contingencies going into Sicily and up into Italy!. We did have some troops working with the Brits in Tunisia and northern Africa, chasing Rommel!. Www@QuestionHome@Com
