Many give a variety of reasons as to why the US had a civil war other than slavery!. However, when it is all said and done, all of those reasons (state's rights, failure to compromise, etc) revolved around slavery one way or another!. Lincoln's only goal in the Civil War was to preserve the Union!. He himself wrote that if he could accomplish the goal of preserving the Union without freeing one slave, he would!. However, he knew slavery had to be abolished because slavery was the reason the Civil War occurred and if he did not abolish slavery, the country would once again find itself in a Civil War!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Abraham Lincoln didn't actually abolish slavery!. Slavery was ended by passage of the 13th Amendment well after his death in December of 1865!. The Emancipation proclamation only "freed" the slaves that were in areas still currently under rebellion!.

In actuality, the only slaves "freed" under the Emancipation Proclamation were the ones that the United States didn't, at that time, have control over!. Any Confederate territory that had been occupied by the United States, and the 4 loyal slave states (Kentucky, Missouri, Maryland, and Deleware) were unaffected by the proclamation!.

As far as the actual reason for the Emancipation Proclamation, the North had been doing very poorly during the war up to the point that it was written!. With the Confederates looking to secure European recognition, and possibly intervention, Lincoln needed something to dissuade them from doing so!.

He had written a preliminary version, but he needed a decisive victory on the battlefield so that it did not appear as an act of desperation or admission on his part that the North wasn't doing well in the war!.

The tactical draw/strategic victory at Antietam in the fall of 1862 was close enough to the "victory" he was looking for, and issued the Emancipation Proclamation after that, which effectively shut the door on any chance that the Confederacy would be officially recognized by the powers in Europe!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
