Question: Medieval infantry officers!?

during the middle ages and Renaissance how did they select infantry officers!?
Were they simply low ranking nobles assigned to a company of footmen by their lord
or were they knights who simply decided they would equip and train and lead an infantry unit!?

Those are two different time periods, with different answers!
in medieval times, nobles had their own armed forces, and men of nobility were the officers- the higher the nobility, the higher the rank!.
In the Renaissance, professional armies were started!. Nobility was still a leading factor in being an officer, but not a requirement!. Britain SOLD commissions to people of wealth, from ensign to Major!. Colonels, commanding regiments, were appointed by the King!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

knights WERE nobility!. Noone else could afford the equipment!.

Every landowner typically recruited his own troops as required, typically drafting his peasants!.

Unit structure would vary wildly depending on the personal leadership style of the commander!.

During the renaiscance, knights mostly disappeared as firearms made their armour useless!.
