Although the rules and procedures vary a little bit from place to place, it basically goes like this!.!.!.
Your application is read and voted on in the Lodge the first meeting after it is received, it is read and voted on again in the following meeting- so there is two months right there!.
After that it is sent to the Grand Lodge of your state to be finalized with a brief background check, during which time the Lodge you applied with also sends out a committee to interview you in person!.
So yeah, its gonna take a little time, add that to the tradition that most Lodges are "dark" (inactive) for two months of the year, and depending when exactly your petition hits, you could be looking at a six month span from the date you apply to the date you are notified that you are accepted!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

It can take some time to set up degrees, some lodges like to do several candidates at once!. Your 18th birthday may not fall at the right time!.

Because of schedule problems, and Christmas holidays, I had to wait four months between my First and Second degrees!. It gave me a lot of time to memorize the answers I had to give before taking the second degree!. Www@QuestionHome@Com

JR pretty much sums it up!.

There are delays built in to the process to make sure that the Petitioner is serious in his request, that there has been ample time for interviews etc!.!.!.

There's no rush, if you join when you're 18 you'll have a long Masonic career!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
