No, we're in tough economic times but we've been through this sort of thing before!. It's just never pleasant!.

The US is plenty strong to survive for some time!. Our democratic form of government is another story!. Our civil liberties have been taking a beating for a while now (I don't just mean in the Bush Administration, though that has significantly accelerated the process)!. Our mainstream media is strongly biased to the right (contrary to the misconception that the media has a "liberal bias"), largely because it's now owned entirely by a small number of very conservative corporations!. Journalism doesn't really exist in the mainstream media any more; it's more about presentation and show now than investigative reporting!.

But most dangerous of all is that the general public doesn't understand democracy or civil liberties!. People don't "get it" any more, that freedom of speech and religion means pretty much *all* speech and *all* religious beliefs, not just popular ones!. (Popular beliefs don't need protection!.) People don't understand the principle behind freedom from unreasonable search & seizure, that "it's ok as long as they're spying on someone else" doesn't cut it and that thinking "I don't have anything to worry about because I don't have anything to hide" is asking for trouble!.

Americans don't understand the principles--the reasons--behind democracy and civil rights, and they'll enthusiastically follow a government that violates those things as long as it looks nice and makes pretty promises (or serious enough threats from terrorism or whatnot)!. When a dictatorship takes over this country, it will be in the name of democracy!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
