Question: Was it fair for Mary Tudor to be given the nickname Bloody Mary!?
Best Answer - Chosen by Asker:
she was given the name "bloody mary" because she had roughly 300 people burnt at the stake (marian persecutions) when they refused to accept the re-introduction of catholic religion!. she was rumoured to have been quite cold and cruel!.

however, her childhood was not the happiest of times, her father divorcing her mother and imposing whatever wishes he had at the time must have had an effect!. mary was declared illegitimate and was made to be lady in waiting to her sister, elizabeth, before she was also declared illegitimate!.
her marriage was opposed by people and she suffered phantom pregnancies!.

so it is a matter of opinion!. i believe she deserves the title given, she gave overly harsh punishments to those opposing her!. however, it may be understandable if you consider the treatment of her during her early years!.

It is a long time ago since I studied history at school!. If my memory serves me correctly and with exception of warfare, she had more people killed than any other monarch before or since!. The deaths had nothing to do with crime it was all to do with religion!. She was so intolerant of those who would not follow the catholic faith she had then killed!.

In answer to you question: Was it fair for Mary Tudor to be given the nickname Bloody Mary!? I am inclined to think Yes!. Murdering people, why!? Because they didn't believe in God!? No, because they didn't believe in a particular version of the Christian faith!. I don't understand that and never will!.

Being a Godless person myself I fail to understand why so many Christians live such an anti-Christian life!. That is the reason why I will never understand the reason Mary Tudor did what she did!.

A small note to the Christians reading this reply:

I do not think all Christians live an anti-Christian life and I have no problem with people believing in a God!. Killing people because these people don't believe in a God or don't follow a particular faith for me is an example of a very anti-Christian thing to do!.

personally i think mary has been recorded rather unfairly!. all reports point to a very pleasant woman with a soft heart who wanted nothing more than a child to love and a good husband!. that she got stuck with the arrogant, mean hearted phillip of spain (altho partly her fault - she did choose him!!!) was the ruination of her but it came hard on the heels of a lifetime of living in exile, be persecuted for her faith and continual plots to disinherit then de-throne her!. she was a religious fanatic which is always a bit scary but Elizabeth had more people killed i believe!. England was a pretty dangerous place at the time - the laws were changed so often people couldn't keep up with what was allowed and what wasn't!. I don't think mary deserved her nickname, despite the blood that was spilt during her reign!. it makes me rather sad when i think of all the disasters in her life and how phillip shattered her heart after the battering of phantom pregnancies and being rejected by her father and cut off from her mother!. i've just read another answer and have to add that phillip and mary did not hate each other - she was utterly devoted to him and he used her shamelssly then abandoned her and attempted to marry elizabeth when she came to power!. i could go on about it all day - think i better stop!!!!!!!!!!!!Www@QuestionHome@Com

she did kill a lot of people!. and she wasn't very popular to begin with!. she couldn't produce an heir, and she was like ultra catholic, and her marriage to the king of spain was only to prevent war!. they hated each other!. so was always in a bad mood, and kept elizabeth locked in the tower of london because the protestants wanted to put her on the throne!. she didn't have very many allies!. she probably got a bad rap!. but then again she wasn't very nice!. No!. In proportion, she actually did not kill as many as Elizabeth!. However she was a Catholic and therefore on the losing side, so historians tend to paint a rosier scene for the winners!.

However, she nonetheless killed many protestants!. Www@QuestionHome@Com
