Since 1000, there are many very important discoveries and cultural events, I didn't limit to just 10 , but you can pick or choose whichever you would like!.

Broadly there are a few areas I'll mention , Industrial / Mechanical / Scientific / Philosophical

- The discovery of basic accounting methods - without which, businesses would not be able to be much larger than say a mom-and-pop shop, this lead eventually to banking systems and trading systems which are the underpinning of a prosperous economy of some scale!.

A whole host of developments around post-medieval life are absolutely critical and we take them for granted!.

- Mass Literacy - having more than a tiny percentage of your population able to read and write is a MASSIVE change between 1300 and today, leading almost directly to the modern nation state, university systems and a relatively large middle class of traders, engineers and specialist trades , distinctly more prosperous than previous peasantry!.

- The scientific method - within just a couple of hundred years of systematizing a method of simple observational method and natural investigation, thousands of advances have been forthcoming, stemming largely from the religious preservation of Aristotlean (ancient Greek) principles, the concept of rational inquiry was "rediscovered" between about 1300 and 1600 and took off from there!.

- Nation/States - The development of the nation-state, was itself an arms race, whereby nation/states with more organized middle classes and more innovative universities have driven national and international change to this day, countries that do not invest in their educational systems / attract talent have thus always been in the second tier of nation/states, in this way there is and since about 1200 has been an "arms race" between nation states for the best and brightest!.

- The discovery of the Americas - largely a consequence of a large trading class, looking for efficiencies backed by government dollars, Columbus is rightly credited for rediscovering America based off of the pre-industrial discovery of Lief Erickson just after/around 1000 AD!.

- Calculus - Advanced mathematics, leading directly to linear algebra, and other methods of understanding at a mathematical level allowed engineering and science to build and create and understand the universe around us in countless ways we would not otherwise have been able to!.

- The move towards democracy, the concepts of the enlightenment, of jurisprudence, strong legal systems and parliamentary or constitutional representation, stemming from the concepts around the natural rights and status of free men (and later women), cannot be understated!.

- The germ theory - this allowed medicine not superstition to be able
to diagnose disease and cure sickness, human life would be significantly more miserable and our population much less if disease had never been conquered populations might be much smaller!.

- Darwin's theory of evolution and Mendel's genetics , within months of one another both the theory and then the proof of heritability were discovered, while not tremendously important - except as a concept - in the time-period mentioned, it is the basis of many different industries today, including custom genetics, and machine intelligence , not to mention a whole host of other related inventions!. Mendel's work lead DIRECTLY to statistics, crop yield improvements and a whole host of other tremendously important and practical work!.

- The rise of labor-saving machines, James Watt invented the Steam Engine, and there was an industrial explosion of ideas, from standardized parts and machine tools, the machinery of the industrial revolution, since the abolishment of slavery was largely able to be conducted because of work-saving machines, bringing about the industrial revolution and mass production and again creating urban environments, product surpluses (for the first time)

- A new relatively wealthy "worker class", which of course lead to communism - which is - AT BEST - a lateral invention , since communist governments, tend towards totalitarian systems and the oppression of LARGE numbers of people (the former USSR and present day China), however some aspects of moderate forms of light socialism lead to important rights for workers, women and much better working conditions for workers!.

- James Maxwell's Equations - This was a SERIOUSLY lucky break, had Maxwell NOT discovered his equations,a whole host of inventions might not have occurred in quite the same way, we might not have been able to build larger energy production systems or use electricity for much of any efficiency, Edison's later commercialization and development of the light bulb and other energy distribution systems would not have been possible!.

- Radio - Nicolae Tesla and Guilliermo Marconi made radio an effective tool of mass communication!. Coupled with the later work of Claude Shannon, long-distance communications became possible!.

- Flight - The Wright brothers airplane made the possibility of Da Vinci's flying man a distinct reality!. Today, for a few hundred dollars, anyone can go more or less anywhere on the planet, within a day or so, this lead directly to increased power-plants and ultimately our first tentative steps towards space!.

Important Historical Events Include

- The Battle of Hastings - in 1066 which lead to the Magna Carta and the slow decay of Imperial / Medieval / power!.

- Easily the most important battle though was in the sping of 1290, actually a "non" battle of tremendous impact!.

Was the order to return given Generals Jochi and Obedai of the Mongol Empire to the Mongolian Imperial throne!.

Both generals were recalled , just DAYS before a final western campaign from Hungary (which they had conquered the previous winter) was to have started!. HAD the generals gotten on the move, the recall order might not have been received in time to prevent the either serious damage to or perhaps the complete annihilation of many if not all governments, religions and polities Europe!.

European tactics and methods were incapable of defending against Mongol methods, and given their rate of conquest, Europe would have been depopulated (as was the policy), in just a couple of years!.

- The Spanish and later European conquest of the New World - Not only was it one of the largest European conquest, by the measure of it's day, it sealed the destruction of most all of the native American empires and cultures, a single battle, that of Pizzaro and Atahualpa at r Cajamarca, where 106 Spaniards defeated an Inca Army of more than 80,000 men, Pizzaro was much more controverial than Cortez in this regard, because he killed Atahualpa after a ransom had been paid!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
