Ok, let's first start off with the nation up through 1859, that was the last year a state was added before the First Secession Crisis!. The states were, in order of their admission to the nation and the date they became a state, the following

Delaware December 7, 1787
Pennsylvania December 12, 1787
New Jersey December 18, 1787
Georgia January 2, 1788
Connecticut January 9, 1788
Massachusetts February 6, 1788
Maryland April 28, 1788
South Carolina May 23, 1788
New Hampshire June 21, 1788
Virginia June 25, 1788
New York July 26, 1788
North Carolina November 21, 1789
Rhode Island May 29, 1790
Vermont March 4, 1791
Kentucky June 1, 1792
Tennessee June 1, 1796
Ohio March 1, 1803
Louisiana April 30, 1812
Indiana December 11, 1816
Mississippi December 10, 1817
Illinois December 3, 1818
Alabama December 14, 1819
Maine March 15, 1820
Missouri August 10, 1821
Arkansas June 15, 1836
Michigan January 26, 1837
Florida March 3, 1845
Texas December 29, 1845
Iowa December 28, 1846
Wisconsin May 29, 1848
California September 9, 1850
Minnesota May 11, 1858
Oregon February 14, 1859

Now the first thirteen were the original 13 Colonies and their date is also the date they each ratified the Constitution!. So right now we are looking the thirty-three states of the nation before the First Secession Crisis!. The term First Secession Crisis actually refers to those states that seceeded from the country before the attack on Fort Sumter and thusly before the start of the war!. These were the states of the Confederacy on the eve of war!. So in order of Secession, complete with date, the First Secession Crisis is:

South Carolina December 20, 1860
Mississippi January 9, 1861
Florida January 10, 1861
Alabama January 11, 1861
Georgia January 19, 1861
Louisiana January 26, 1861
Texas February 1, 1861

It should be noted that of these seven, Texas did not attend the convention which created the Confederacy, which occured just three days after Texas seceeded!. So from February 4, 1861 until March 2, 1861 there were six Confederate States!. On March 2nd Texas joined the Confederacy making all seven states of the First Secession Crisis a seperate nation!.

Now during the month of January as most of the future Confederate states were seceeding, one state was admited into the nation!. Kansas became a state on January 29, 1861!.

Then came April 12, 1861 and the attack on Fort Sumter!. The war began and Lincoln's call for volunteers brought forth the Second Secession Crisis!. The states of the Second Secession Crisis, complete with their dates of secession, were:

Virginia April 17, 1861
Arkansas May 6, 1861
Tennessee May 6, 1861 (June 8, 1861)
North Carolina May 20, 1861

Now, the reason for two dates on Tennessee is because Tennessee held a referendum on May 6th but did not vote to seceed until June 8th!. With the passing of the vote the May 6th date became retroactive!.

So by the Battle of First Bull Run (First Manassas), the states loked something like this:

Union
Delaware
Pennsylvania
New Jersey
Connecticut
Massachusetts
Maryland
New Hampshire
New York
Rhode Island
Vermont
Kentucky
Ohio
Indiana
Illinois
Maine
Missouri
Michigan
Iowa
Wisconsin
California
Minnesota
Oregon
Kansas

Confederacy
South Carolina
Mississippi
Florida
Alabama
Georgia
Louisiana
Texas
Virginia
Arkansas
Tennessee
North Carolina

During the war two states were admited to the Union, West Virginia in June 20, 1863 and Nevada in October 31, 1864!. also, Missouri (October 31, 1861) and Kentucky (November 20, 1861) attempted to seceed from the Union, but they were unable to!. Though both were admitted into the Confederacy and actually had two governments during the war!.
