The British actually invented roads, we just told the Romans to keep marching in straight lines until we said so!.

We created Rhodes too but thats a different story!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Like other military conquerers (eg Nazi Germany) the Romans' fondness for straight roads was largely to do with the fast deployment of troops as anything else and in the UK traces are clearly followed and still in places used!.
But you'll know in the UK much/too much importance is attached to property rights and ownership - so when ancient tracks were upgraded to metalled roads the builders followed the originals, so that Farmer Giles and the local Landlords continued to hold their properties intact and roads had to go round them!. This resulted in a crazy patchwork of connecting roads - except for major routes, where central government have powers of compulsory land purchase!.
There are advantages in the winding minor roads - they help reduce the speed of cars, except for the maniacs - and they're a useful hindrance to any invading forces!. Some would argue they add to the charm of our green and pleasant land - it's certainly better than being 'pushed' by HVGs at high speed and never getting much chance to see the landscape!.

Ancient Romans created the first roads system but ancient potholes destroyed them!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

What are you talking about!? Are you referring to the fact that Europeans drive on the left and North Americans drive on the right!? That doesn't really have much to do with road building!. Www@QuestionHome@Com
