Question: During long trips with livestock in barren areas, such as on the Oregon Trail!?
What were the livestock fed!? I'm guessing there wasn't enough vegetation along the way!? Did they transport the food with them in the wagons!?

What if someone were traveling by horseback with no wagon in a barren area, how would they keep the horse well-fed without transporting enormous quanitities of food!? (I'm guessing that they couldn't stop very frequently to resupply!.)

How often did they stop along the way to resupply!?Www@QuestionHome@Com

the live stock had open grange = when they stopped the wagon trains at night the horses and other live stock were allowed to eat all they could find!. This was open prairie = even in the mountains there was scrub grass!.

Chickens scratched in the fields, = dogs were given scraps I'm sure!.

they only brought one cow per family if they were lucky enough to afford the cow to begin with!.

I'm sure you have heard of the cattle round ups to walk the cattle for hundreds of miles to be sold at slaughter markets!.

As far as a lone traveler = when you stopped your horse fed = the whole US had grass, and feed for horses and cattle!.

Forts for supplies were far and few between - the supplies would be for the traveler = not the animal = coffee, sugar, hard tack, flour for biscuits, beans, ammunition, etc!. boots, blankets for comfort of the cowboy!.

They stopped each night to let the livestock graze!. They carried some oats and grains for the horses and let them graze at night also!. They were usually hobbled so they couldn't go very far away and there was always one person awake to watch over the herd!. They stopped when they reached a town and they needed something!. It also took a lot of people to herd the cattle and they had to be red also!. They usually had a chuckwagon with food for the men and grain for the horses!. They always stopped at a water source at night so the herd and the horses could drink and they had water for the cook to use!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
