Question: HISTORY! world war 1!.!?
TAKEN FROM PP!. 75-76 OF THE SCHOOL TEXTBOOK 'FORGEIN AFFAIRS 1886-1914' WRITTEN BY M!.C MORGAN IN THE 1980s!.
'lloyd george was correct in saying that in 1905 nobody was building such a ship, but not in the implication ( suggestion ) that nobody had thought of builiding one!. on that contrary, suggestions for a larger battleship were already in the air in a number of forgein countires, including austria-hungary,italy, japan and the usa!. this almost meant that one would be built somewhere ;and it was not impossible that, given good secuirity arrangements, it mite be built in secret, and that a foegein power might in this way get a head start!. beyond this tehre were 2 further arguements that supported the case for building : no ship of dreadnought dimensions could get through the keil canal, and to take battleships to and from the baltic to the north sea, germany would have to reconstruct it completely!.!.!. To reconstruct the kiel canal would take time ; and the reconstruction would give time for the dreadnoguhts to be built!.

Well, Britain at this time still had the strongest navy, they prided themselves on the fact that their navy was larger than the next two navies put together!. So they wanted to maintain this number, which would be increasingly harder as more and more nations became industrialised and had the capability of building large navies, so instead of 'quantity', the British may have reverted to 'quality'!.

Morgan also tells us of the fact that a major industrial rival, the Germans, were basically unable to build dreadnoughts, thus giving the British an advantage over the Germans if they were to build the Dnoughts, as the Germans would be unable to match its fire power!.

Morgan also says that the country who could manufacture the first dreadnought class of ship would have a "head start", especially if done in secret, in naval supremacy!. On top of this Britain had the means of building such a ship, it had shipyards that were large enough (Liverpool, Barrow and more) and it had a heritage of being the pioneers in naval technology unlike several other naval powers, who would have to build special shipyards, find skilled craftsmen that they may not already have and also the materials!.

All of this adds up to Britain trying to maintain the strongest navy in the world and remaining the top sea power!. And Morgan + own knowledge shows us that it would be a good idea if Britain did develop a dreadnought, which they did a few years later!.
