I visited Roanoke Island this summer!. Based on the history prior to the settlement (i!.e: the fact that an earlier ship of just men had attacked the local native population) I believe the natives attacked the colony when they were weak with hunger!. They were waiting for John White to come back with provisions and did not learn how to survive on the land!. The natives, feeling threatened by atrocities from the first settlers, attacked the weakened village!. Those who were not killed were assimilated into their tribe!. Usually it was women and children who were taken alive and assimilated into the tribe!. In later years newer white settlers saw some suspiciously non-native looking people among the natives!. They were likely descendents of the white women and children who were taken in!. A querky history fact is that white women who have been kidnapped and taken into a native american tribe often resisted rescue because as women they were treated much better!. Women often had a say in native american society, whereas in white, European based society they were simply property!. Www@QuestionHome@Com
