Dame Nellie Melba can claim strong connections to the feminist cause and has been honoured as such by recognition of her name in her home country and particularly around Melbourne where the Girls' Grammar School, I believe, has a concert hall named after her!. Of course, she was the outstanding soprano opera star of her day, the rightful heir and successor to Adelina Patti (with whom she has the claim to fame of being the only two female opera stars to have marble busts of their likeness displayed in the foyer of the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden!. However, like many great stars, she was not an easy woman to like or to get on with professionally!. (There is a lovely story of the great Caruso (whom she abhorred as common) placing a warmed sausage in her hand which he had concealed in his clothing, whilst singing to her "Thy tiny hand is frozen") Despite her diva-like tendencies, the public adored her and great chefs created dishes holding her name in her honour!. Peach Melba and Melba Sauce live on today with the vast majority of the population unaware of the connection!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
