the reformation basically grew in england when henry excommunicated himself from the pope, well the pope excommunicated him in 1533 when he married anne boleyn in a private ceremony!.

although england was at war religiously, as Cromwell under henry VIII ordered the desecration of hundreds of monastires and monks to be hung and burned throughout the cities!. There was a pilgramage of grace in 1537 when henry was married to jane seymour, where the catholics attempted to take back the true faith and martyr themselves by being killed for bringing the faith back to restoration!.

Basically from then until henry VIII's death the church was known as english catholic, but were not answerable to the pope!.
When Henry died, his son Edward VI took the throne as a protestant king, under heavy influence of his uncles ed and thomas seymour however thomas had married kate parr, henrys last wife, after henrys death so edward was in charge of the care of the young king!.

Both brothers were beheaded, thomas in 1548 and ed in the 1550's for attempted kidnapping and trumped up charges!.

I am a bit rusty on the exacts but am a tudor obessed lol so am into the reformation myself

so basically

1533-england became excommunicated
1537-Pilgrimage of grace
1539-Arrangemnt with the protestant anne of cleves, swayed by the martin luther influence in germany, marries Henry VIII of england for six months!.
Cromwell is beheaded as a traitor for using the marriage for his own protestant gain when the marriage is annulled and henry marries Katherine howard, a catholic!.
1547-Henry VIII dies, leaves heavily protestant wife Katherine parr as dowager queen
Many protestant Vs catholic battles rage throughout the city even after his death

English bible is translated and made official under king james rule
hence the "king james version

however the english translation was available since the late 1400's in secret, and anne boleyn had the english bible in her chambers for her maids in waiting to read

so in all fairness it was a state rather than a religion during the reformation, then when edward died the land was restored to catholisism by Mary tudor which signed the deaths of hundreds of protestants
then elizabeth became queen in 1558 after marys death and the reformation was in full swing, with a protestant nation officially delcared for the next 40 years, then king james took over w ho was also protestant!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
