Question: When and why did england become protestants!?
Best Answer - Chosen by Asker:
England adopted the Protestant religion during King Henry VIII reign, approximately around 1534!. Prior to this, England had followed Roman Catholicism, this denied a man the right to divorce his wife!. Henry VIII began to support Protestants during 1533-1534 when he wanted to divorce his wife, Catherine of Aragon in order to marry Anne Boleyn!.

Many people still followed the Roman Catholic way of life, until the Church of England and the Protestant traditions became more accepted!.

Hope this helps :)Www@QuestionHome@Com

Henry VIII broke from the Catholic Church and made himself head of the Church of England, because he wanted to annul his marriage to Catherine of Aragon, and marry Anne Boleyn!. He had the monasteries dissolved because he wanted to get his hands on their wealth!. However, he never thought of himself as a Protestant, and in fact continued to persecute Protestant heretics during the remainder of his reign!. His last wife, Katherine Parr, for instance, got into trouble for befriending Anne Askew, a Protestant heretic whom Henry had burnt at the stake!. He also persecuted Catholics who protested against the dissolution of the monasteries, an uprising in the north of England, known as the Pilgrimage of Grace, was put down with great savagery!.

Henry VIII's son, Edward VI, was definitely a Protestant, and the church of England became much more firmly Protestant during his reign!. Cranmer's English prayerbook was introduced into English churches in 1549, leading to uprisings in protest in Devon and Cornwall, known as the Prayerbook rebellion!. Concerted efforts were made to strip churches of their holy statues and vestments, and to do away with most of the Saints Days, which had traditionally been holidays!.

During the reign of Edward's sister Mary, Catholicism once again became the official religion of england, but when mary died and was succeeded by Elizabeth I, the Protestant religion became firmly established!. At the beginning of Elizabeth's reign, most people outside of London and the home counties were still Catholic, but by the end of her reign most people had been raised in the Protestant religion and accepted it!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

At Buddha!. The Tudors has no HISTORICAL value whatsoever there is no point to it as a history show!. It's just another fictional drama to watch!.

England became Protestant for many reasons, the main one and the one most people will talk about though is Henry VIII wanting a divorce from Katherine of Aragon!.

Henry had read a passage in leviticus that said, if you marry your dead brothers wife you will have no son, and he took it to mean that because he had married his brothers wife after his brother was dead, the only children Katherine would have ever given him would be girls!.

Wolsey (Henry's Lord Chancellor and the Papal Legate at the time) was away when Henry decided he wanted a divorce so he could not advise Henry in the best way of getting a divorce!. Katherine was always adamant that Henry VII and herself had never consummated their marriage, and therefore her marriage to Henry VIII was void, Arthur should never have been granted a dispensation from the Pope which allowed Henry VIII and Katherine to get married!. This would have been the best route to go down and get an annulment of the marriage, the Pope could grant an annulment without any loss of face and without admitting that the Pope who granted the dispensation was wrong!.

However Henry used the passage from leviticus as his reason for wanting a divorce, and in the eyes of the Pope, this meant he had to admit that the Pope before him had been wrong and this meant losing face!. Something the Catholic Church was not prepared to do!.

During the hearing of the divorce, Campeggio (another one of the Pope's Papal Legates) asked to hear what Katherine wanted!. Katherine refused to listen to the court and Henry insulting her and refused to spend any more time in that court!. She did not want a divorce and she knew there was no reason for her to have one!. She had been Henry's wife for over 20 years, they had children together and were still good friends!.

Henry became fed up, and after the Pope had said that he was not prepared to grant a divorce, Henry split from the Catholic Church!. His intention was to make another Catholic Church as such - an English one!. This became known as the Protestant Church, and Henry was the head of this Church!. Through the Protestant Church, Henry was granted a divorce from Katherine of Aragon, and allowed to marry Anne Boleyn!.

The Protestant Church is also how Henry divorced Anne of Cleves!. Www@QuestionHome@Com

You obviously haven't been watching the Tudors!. It was as a result of Henry V111 wanting to divorce Katherine of Aragon to marry Anne Boleyn!. The Catholic church stood in the way of this and he therefore stamped his feet until he got his own way and banned the Catholic church in England!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Actually, the reason Henry VIII broke from Catholicism and began the Church of England, because he wanted a divorce from his previous wife and to marry Anne Boleyn but didn't want to be excommunicated from the Catholic church!.

At least that's what I think is how it happened!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
