They got the silver medal!. Nazi Germany achieved the gold medal for cruelty in the 20th century!. Pol Pot of Cambodia got the bronze for killing off most of his own people!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

It was a terrible invasion, but it gets second place to the Nazi's invasion of Russia!. As horrible as the crimes committed by the Japanese were, the Russians endured even worse!. Twenty million Russians died!. In the west, because of the Cold War, the suffering of the Russians has not been talked about much but there's no doubt they had the worst of the Second World War!. Eighty percent of the Nazi war machine was directed against Russia and despite what Hollywood would have you believe it was in the Battle of Stalingrad that the Second World War was decided!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

~I would think that the US gets pretty comparable high marks!. Let us never forget the genocide programs started by Andy Jackson and Martin Van Buren!. The policies of the US Bureau of Indian affairs rival those of the SS and the Nazis!. In fact, the world's first concentration camps were built in Tennessee and Alabama by Van Buren!. He called them "emigration depots"!. It took the British in 1898 to coin the term "concentration camp" when they set up their centers in Boer Wars!. The Nazis looked to the US and UK models when they set up their camps!.

I'd have to rate the US Indian program ahead of the Japanese and Nazis!. The slaughter of the people was bad enough!. The US added to that the near extinction of an entire species of animal, the bison, as a collateral program to enhance the genocide!.

Of course, if one examines CIA declassified documents, the US death toll from 1950 on exceeds that of the Nazis!. Pol Pot was a direct result of a CIA sponsored coup in Cambodia!. CIA put the Shah in power in Iran and created, trained and assisted SAVAK to keep him there!. CIA hand picked Saddam Hussein to take over in Iraq and supported the rise in power of the Baath Party!. Papa Doc Duvalier was a CIA implant!. The death squads of Peru, Uruguay, Bolivia, Columbia, Chile, the Dominican Republic and elsewhere in Latin America were organized and trained by CIA to protect the puppet governments of the tyrants and despots CIA helped put in power there!. The CIA sponsored/instigated wars in Angola and Zaire are still killing people!. Even as out hostages were being held in Iran, Zbigniew Brzezinski and CIA were working with the very people holding them to foment insurrection in Afghanistan!. They hoped to cause the Afghan government to ask for help from the USSR!. When Kabul did ask for assistance, Moscow honored treaty agreements with her ally and sent in the tanks and Hinds!. Washington called it a Soviet invasion!. The people we were helping we called freedom fighters!. We spent tens of billions of dollars buying weapons for them, building camps for us to help train them in Pakistan (lifting sanctions on the Pakistan nuclear program for the right to use Pakistan as the staging area) and we continued to help them until the Soviets left and they took over!. Today we call the freedom fighters terrorists, warlords and the Taliban!. One of them was Osama bin Laden!. Today those same people use the same tactics we helped teach them and the same weapons we gave them!. We just renamed them when they turned on us for a number of different ways we stabbed them in the back!. Of course, we also double-crossed another of our freemdom fighter, patriot, nationalist allies a generation earlier!. That would be Ho Chi Minh and the Viet Minh!. As part of the double cross, we put Ngo Dinh Diem in power in South Viet Nam and protected him while he slaughtered his people!. Our interference didn't stop there!. We went to war to protect Diem and our puppet fiefdom!. Forgetting the combat dead, we killed millions of Vietnamese civilians with indiscriminate bombing and Agent Orange and the other Rainbow herbicides!. (Our support of Ho and the Vietminh in 1940/41 was one of the many factors that made Tojo decide he had no recourse but to attack Pearl before we attacked Japan, but that's another harangue) When 15 CIA backed coups over a dozen years failed in Laos, we bombed them, killing a million or so more civilians!. When we ousted Sukarno in Indonesia and put Suharto in his place, Suharto promptly began the methodical slaughter of hundreds of thousands of his people (many of whom were on lists given to him for the purpose by CIA)!. We needn't count the 2 million Japanese civilians we killed in the Spring of 45 when we destroyed 67 cities of little or no military consequence, but that slaughter had resulted in overtures of peace by the Japanese long before Fat Man and Little Boy!. In fact, the drop date of Little Boy was moved up, rather than back, when bad weather was forecast out of fear that surrender would come before we could use it!. Nimitz, MacArthur, Eisenhower, Chief of Staff Leahy and many others recommended the bombs not be dropped because they were not necessary to end the war!. Most of the Manhattan Project scientists were opposed to using their own creation, especially on civilian targets and especially on targets that were no where need the planned invasion sites!. The Pentagon wanted to wait until the invasion was scheduled (late November on Kyoshu and not until May on Honshu) and that they be used on military targets or troop concentrations!. When we incinerated Hiroshima (they damage was not as extensive as the damage done to Tokyo with incendiaries) we knowing took out about 2000 US civilians who had been stranded there since the start of the war alone with and undetermined number of US and Allied POWs we knew were being held outside the city!. By comparison, the Japanese got 68 civilians at Pearl!.

Looking at the big picture, I'd hardly say what the Japanese did in China in wartime in a single war holds a candle to what the US has systematically done in peacetime across the width and breadth of the globe over 6 decades as a normal facet of foreign affairs policy!.

There is a lot more!. The proof is in declassified US government and CIA records and documents available online!. Look it up rather than wasting your time with the thumbs down or condemning others on matters about which you probably don't have full, complete, reliable, factual information anyhow!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Probably that rates high, but be aware (or reminded) that America has hosted 30 invasions since the second world war-
In terms of carnage- they really took us by surprise- but hiroshima comes to mind as an example of totally inhuman behavior on an unparalleled scale- nagasaki was less populated but still- that's massive reckless and indiscreet killing defined right there- so you'd have to say we sure 'got em back'
On an ethical scale- they were only trying to use the tactical advantage of surprise; which truly dumbfounded us all indeed!.!.!.!. so you'd have to admit they achieved their aim, as grim as that sounds!.
