Question: Did the Wild West actually exist!?
I'm talking Texas Rangers, Cowboys, shootouts, the whole shebang!. Or is it all part of a culture created by movies!?Www@QuestionHome@Com

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker:
Remote communities in the desert did exist, these were mainly inhabited by goldmining prospectors who later abandoned these temporary towns when the deposits of precious metals dried up!.

The "Wild West" was highly exaggerated in Hollywood movies and novels!. You will probably find that the life of a cowboy was not as exciting as in the movies!. They were forced to work long hours for little pay rounding up cows and sheep!. There is some truth to the depiction of the "Wild West" towns in the movies such as gunfights and robberies, these were very common because of the different levels of social class inhabiting the towns!.

Hope that helps!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Yes it did!.

Texas had cattle and sheep herder wars!.

Most of what you see in the western movies were based on events that happened in Kansas, Arizona and New Mexico!.

Gold rushes led to claim disputes that could get violent!.

Native Indian tribes were attacking settlers and the US Army had to fight them!.

Things were romanticized and cleaner then they were in the movies as compared to reality!. A lot of the dirty parts, like disease were left out in the Hollywood version!. A lot of gunfights were ambushes as compared to the "high noon" kind of meetings!.

The towns did exist, and you can visit ghost towns in Arizona and New Mexico!.

They were often set up because of a gold or silver rush, then died out once the mines closed!.

Sometimes they were stops for trains or wagon trains!.

THere were also things like resource towns such as the boxite mines in and near Death Valley!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Yes, it did exist!. That's why it was such common material for movies and serials, it was close to real life, or could have been!. As time went on, things got exaggerated of course, but the basics are still based on reality!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
