To maintain and develop any country, you need safe and regular supplies of goods that country doesn't provide!. Before the days of mechanisation and mass transportation, you would also have wanted a supply of "willing works" (aka slaves) but build the huge structures that showed to your people how successful you were and how lucky THEY were to be allowed to live in your country!. also, if there were other countries that might want to steal away any of your success, it was handy to have a buffer zone of defendable but ultimately expendable countries between you and them!. Of course, the easiest way to secure all these things was just to take them - and once you'd done that, you suddenly found yourself with an empire!Www@QuestionHome@Com

There are many benefits of an empire!.
The Roman Civilization was very advanced for the time, inventing roads, and the first proper bridges!. Using their technology Rome were able to trade with land under its rule!.!.!. for example, a lot of Rome's grain supply came from Egypt!.

An empire can spread its resources making sure that the more important areas (like Rome) were well supplied, and that other territories were in a level economic state!. Having rule of the land and people also meant more armies, more workers and more tax!.

By ruling a stable empire as powerful as Rome, with is economy and mass industry, expansion could be managed quite easily!.

As Rome expanded they were also able to benefit from looting and the spoils of war, destroying armies with many valuable treasures and vast amounts of land and population (such as the Gauls)

Hope this helps!Www@QuestionHome@Com

The Romans wanted an empire for exactly the same reasons as the English, French, Spanish, Dutch and Germans!.!.!.

Money!.

The whole motivation for colonialism and empire building was (and still is) to exploit the natural resources of the conquered territories, usually to the detriment of the people who lived in them!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
