Question: Jackson's Presidency!?
Sorry, I forgot to add these to an earlier question!.!.!.

I know Jackson tried to diminish the power of the federal government, but did he increase the power of the president!? I remember he felt that a president should appoint whoever he wants to his cabinet or something!.!.!.!?

also, besides claiming to promote egalitarianism, what were some of Jackson's beliefs he exposed during his presidency!? And what were some patterns in his actions and decisions!?

THANK YOU SO MUCH! Even if you can only help out with one or two, or all questions, I really appreciate your help!Www@QuestionHome@Com

Jackson did assert Presidential authority over the issue of appointing and removing Cabinet members!. The issue of the withdrawal of the government deposits from the Bank of the United States caused some dissention in the ranks!. He had so ordered his Secretary of the Treasury, who refused and was removed, he appointed another who also refused, and then found one who would withhold the deposits and transfer them to the state banks (called "Pet Banks")!. Article 1 of the Constitution says that the President makes appointments with the advice and consent of the Senate, at that time, it was the assertion of senators, particularly Mr!. Clay of Kentucky, that the Senate must advise and consent to the removal of cabinet officers as well!. This was the cause of his "censure" by the Senate, a move that was expunged when Democrats gained a majority in the upper house!.

He also didn't like paper money (odd, when I first saw one of our current $20!.00 notes, I commented that it looked like a handbill from the 1828 election) and issued an Executive order called the "Specie circular" that all land sales made at Federal land offices must be paid for in specie, that is gold or silver!.

This, incidentally, would also affect his enemy Mr!. Clay, who was very much a speculator in western lands!. If a person had to pay up front for their property, and not have the office carry a note until it could be redeemed, sometimes by the resale of the land at a profit, made speculation more difficult!.

Jackson didn't like Native Americans, though he did adopt Linkoya, an orphaned Creek boy he found during the Creek war in 1813, and his policy on Indian Removal reflected this!. His opinions on moving native tribes west had been quite evident long before he occupied the White House, as evidenced in his actions as agent at the end of that war!. He not only forced his Red Stick enemies to surrender their land, but also some of his Creek and Cherokee allies!.

His campaign against the Monster Bank was another, discussed above!. He felt it was an elitist entity, which controlled the value of currency at the expense of the common man!.

He also supported the Union, as his actions against the Nullifiers in South Carolina proved!.

And he was the first US President to retire the National Debt!. Come to think of it I think he was also the last!. Www@QuestionHome@Com

You are refering to The Spoils Sysetm, in which Jackson fired all political members that opposed him and in there place, put people who did support him, regardless of experience!.

Well, besides egalitarianism, I know he had an intense hatered towards Native American's because they had killed his father in a raid, or something like that!. I know he also took down the 2nd National Bank!.

Hope that helps!Www@QuestionHome@Com
