Question: 18th century American colonist vernacular!?
Hi, I'm working on a paper for my american history class on Virginian colonists!. For my paper, I have to write from the point of view of a colonist!. Since I'm trying to make the essay as accurate as possible, I'd like to use appropriate language, but am finding it rather difficult!.

Are there any resources online that could help me with the speech of the early colonists!?

Thanks for your help!Www@QuestionHome@Com

The last link is probably the best!. I should always start there! Information was surprisingly hard to find!. 18th century British English is easy!. 19th century American English is easy!. 18th century American!.!.!.not so easy!.

This might be more accurate than you want, but here's "The vowel system of a reconstructed 18th-century proto-language ancestral to modern 'standard' English dialects in both England and America"

It won't help you with vernacular, but 18th century writers will give you a good feel for the language!. The first link for writers, the second to find their e-texts!.

If I can't find anything better, you can go through each page and use your browser's search function (ctrl-f) to find "18" for 18th century!.

Some 18th century slang, but I don't know how much of this is "chiefly British", as the dictionaries like to say!.

Colonial Williamsburg, one of my favorite sources of information on every day life in the colonies!. This article is about language, and it has some slang!.
