The colonists refused to buy the tea because they were the ones drinking the tea but the merchants couldn't make any profit from it because Britain gave the East India Company monopoly over the tea!. In Boston the governor wouldn't allow the ships to go back without emptying their cargo so at night some of the colonists snuck on to the ship and dumped all the tea into the sea!. That was the Boston Tea Act!.
