Question: Did the irish/scottish ever keep slaves black or otherwise!?

Yes!. All Celtic tribes (not only in the British Isles - the Celts originated in Eurasia, and migrated westward) had institutional slavery!. I have seen no evidence of chattel slavery (slaves who were bought and sold like cooking pots or cows) in the Celtic areas of the mainland but it might have happened!. A normal way of acquiring slaves was of course warfare; prisoners who were not killed would be used as servants and workers!.

In Scotland there were whole septs (extended families) which were nominally part of a clan, but in fact had the status of hereditary servants of the clan: in other words, whole families of unfree labourers!.

In Ireland there was certainly chattel slavery in both the dark and middle ages!. The Irish, both under the Vikings and later, had a major slave-market in Dublin: in fact the town of Dublin only exists because of the slave trade!. The slaves came from slave-raiding; both Norsemen and Irish systematically raided coastal areas to acquire slaves, which were valuable property easily converted into cash in the market!.

Sadly, slavery was normal over the whole world until the modern period - and still continues in some countries!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

are you asking if scottish or irish people had african slaves!.!.

yes would be the answer!. although probably not in scotland or ireland!. scottish and irish landowners in the new world would of had slaves!.

a way of knowing this is by african americans surnames!. slaves took the surnames of their "owners"!. so if an african american has a scottish or irish surname his ancestors would have been slaves to a scottish or irish landowner!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Belfast was founded on slavery, a lot of the city fathers who "built" Belfast even though Belfast was flourishing 2000 years long before the settlers came were bristol slave merchants, sugar tobbaco even flax had to come from somewhere other than Ireland!. So in a way were all guilty of aiding slavery!. Belfast and Bristol a lot of sea tradeable commerce passed both ways!. All of the famous landmarks in Belfast were built by profits from slavery by way of tobacco, thats the city hall and the Albert clock!. Www@QuestionHome@Com
