Question: What type of soldiers fought in the 54th Massachusetts!?
Best Answer - Chosen by Asker:
Their official designation was the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry!. Most of the enlisted personnel were African American!. All the officers were white!.

Attached is a list I found from the National Archives of the number of enlisted men who were missing after the engagements at Ft!. Wagner (Charleston Harbor) July 18, 1863, and James Island a few days before!. Many of these men were dead of course, though battles can be very confusing things, and men do get separated from their regiments and then wander back in later!. Www@QuestionHome@Com
