Lets see, my Grandmother:

Knitted balaclavas for the soldiers,
She and many others recycled and recouped rubber and metal for the war effort!.
She wrote to my Grandfather and her brothers and sent them cigarettes and certain types of food on a regular basis!.
She sold war bonds!.
My other Grandmother: Belonged to a society that raised money for the war effort, she knitted gloves and balaclavas as well!.
She and lots of others had large vegetable gardens, chickens, bought dairy products locally!. As the war effort made certain types of food less available!.
They patched and reused shoes, stockings, made their own clothing!. Many of the factories that made these sorts of things had been retooled to make things during the war!.
