Either a country was Catholic and took to suppressing Protestants (France, Austria) or became Protestant and took to suppressing Catholics (England!.) In Catholic France, the monarchy suppressed Huguenots (Calvinists!.) Henry IV eventually came to power, converted to Catholicism, and signed the Edict of Nantes that allowed Protestantism-until it was overturned and the monarchy went right back to suppressing the Huguenots!. In the Netherlands, a Catholic army from Habsburg Spain was eventually thrown off by the Protestant Dutch!. In England, Catholics were forced underground by Henry VIII, came back under Mary, then were forced underground again by Elizabeth!.Www@QuestionHome@Com well, like all wars!.!.!.!.!.!.!.basically, a whole lot of good men died, fighting for a few fools, who were squabbling over money and power and disguised their never ending greed under the banner of religion!.
