There were several viking groups!. The eastern (Swedish primarily), and western (Danes, Norse), and finally colonials from Russoa to Ireland-Britain,Iceland!.
They were originally just traders with opportunist raids, eventually they took advantage of the overly superstious "Christian" ignorant europeans, who had allowed their controlling church leadership to keep them dominated by cruel kings and ignorance!. After the great climatic changes in the fith thru seventh centuries they forgot theur trading morality and became warlike, especially after all the silly civil strife had Allowed Muslims to conquer former greek and gothic civilizations from North Africa to Spain all the way to Central Asia!.
The Vikings actually controlled most of the Slavic contries (swedes) to (Danes)England Ireland, Northern france even Sicily!.
They were NOT ignorant, but after seening that they were almost always victoriuos (even against the Muslims) they did become more arrogant and cruel!.
They have heavily influenced our world,English is a blend of their language and Anglo-Latin-French-Celtic!. It also effects our political thought with our Patlimentary systems( Icelandic "ALLTHING")
The vikings were not all tall blonde "ERIC" types they would pass for any white european type today!. Tall, short, thick, thin, hairy,or bald, handsome or sometimes ugly!.!.
They didn't practice one wife all of the time, they stole all the pretty girls from everywher they went, but there was much more equality for women in NORTH countries than anywhere else in the world!. They had a belief system that took all the good things in, including new ideas, and valued innovation!. Women were more empowered and in some cases were allowed to own property!.
They conquered by the sword but ruled by sharing power until the ideas of "Kings Chosen by God" became a credo!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

The vikings were a section of the Norwegian, Swedish and Danish male population who regularly took to raiding across the North Sea to Scotland, Ireland, England, Wales, France, other parts of Europe and ultimately as far as Greenland, Iceland and Newfoundland!.

Viking should be thought of as an occupation, something like piracy, involving fast longships with shallow draughts which could navigate far inland along tidal rivers and deliver surprise attacks on unsuspecting populations!. Since the crews of these ships were generally small in number, surprise was a positive benefit!.

Those Norse people who stayed at home were not vikings - simply Scandinavian farmers and merchants!. When the vikings settled down to farm or become craftsmen and merchants in other lands (Scotland, England, Normandy and so on) they immediately ceased to be vikings and became Norse settlers!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
