Hittites are important for our understanding of the origin of Indo-European languages and development of the non-Semitic culture outside Fertile Crescent!. They are credited with introduction of iron processing to the mankind and creating first professional chariotry -army in the history!. Europeans always wondered about the origin of their languages, and what was the first civilization that had their genetic roots, comparable to civilizations of Egypt or Mesopotamia!. After deciphering the Hittite language, it was proved that the proto-European languages originated from area around Black Sea!. This language groups spread to Europe, Middle East, Persia, and India, and many our western languages can be traced to that region!.
Hittite culture was highly sophisticated, and their discovery of iron processing and metallurgy advanced the mankind further!. The iron tools were far superior to Bronze, and Iron weapons were the most superior weapons of their time!. This enabled to Hittites to create one of the first land empire that predate many other ancient empires from Egypt to Persia!. The military tactics were superior of the Fertile Crescent, and using chariots over infantry as the primary battle tactic was used throughout the ancient history or until development of calvary!. The Hittites are not the oldest civilization!. Sumer is around 4,500-4,000 BCE, Egyptians cultures are even older than that!. Civilizations in India and China predate the Hittites as well!. The Hittites were around 1500-1300 BCE!. As far as importance goes!.!.!.It depends on what you would consider important!. Every aspect of history is important really, it has made the world what it is today!. They are mentioned in the Hebrew Bible several times, but as far as any great advancements or cultural discoveries, there really isn't much there!.
