Best Answer - Chosen by Asker:
The Slavery Amelioration Act 1798 was a statute passed in the Leeward Islands to improve the conditions of slaves in those parts of the British Caribbean colonies!. It introduced financial compensation for slaves, and therefore penalties for owners, for instances of cruelty or serious neglect!.

It also provided basic entitlements of slaves to clothes, food and elementary education!. The Act was curious in some of its terms and effects!. For example, it prohibited marriages between slaves according to Christian religious ceremony!.

The Act was effectively repealed by the Slave Trade Act 1807, which made it illegal to trade in slaves in any British territory!. That Act was itself repealed and superseded by the Slavery Abolition Act 1833, which made it illegal for anyone to own a slave anywhere in British territory!.

Sometimes the Slavery Amelioration Act is portrayed as an example of altruism and kindliness in the Age of Enlightenment, and this is partly true!. But there had been slave uprising throughout the Caribbean and some loss of European life, notably in French Haiti with the Slaves Revolt that started in 1797, led by Toussaint L'Ouverture!. The Slavery Amelioration Act was an urgent British compromise statute to keep British slaves happier than their French counterparts!. also, there was such pressure at Westminster for abolition, that this Act was seen by many as a "holding statute" until the full legislation could be draughted and agreed in Parliament!.
