Heard the saying "It takes two to fight"!? It's like that with WW1 really!. It was the result of a build up in tensions between countries in Europe over a number of years, and it only took one spark for the whole thing to explode - that spark being the assassination of Grandduke Franz Ferdinand, heir to the throne of Austria-Hungary, by the Serbian extreme group the Black Hand!. As well as this the tangled wed of alliances in Europe at the time didnt help matters in the slightest!.
The build up of tensions in Europe cant be blamed on one country!. Germany definitely did cause some tension, with the Franco-Prussian war, their victory in this war, and their taking of the formerly French provinces of Alsace and Lorraine!. However the tensions resulting from that were not the only ones in Europe!. There was much tension in the Balkans, and Serbia was also a major cause of tension!.
It was Serbs who assassinated Franz Ferdinand, and while Germany certainly did encourage the resulting declaration of war by Austria-Hungary through its 'blank cheque' of support, as it was a chance for the relatively-recently formed nation of Germany to flex its muscles, so to speak, it was really acting more on opportunity than anything else!.
It is unfair to give just Germany the entire blame of the war, however it certainly did encourage the war once the circumstances reached that stage!.

Well it was a conflict between Serbia and Austria that caused they war!.Austrian archduke Franz Ferdinand (later responsible for such hits as Take Me Out and Matinee) was assassinated while parading in Sarajevo !. As a result Austria (along with its ally Germany) demanded the serbians investigate the crime!. They refused (backed by their huge ally Russia) and this schism escalated into war!. The Kaiser was far less interested in war than Hitler after him, but he certainly wasn't ad-versed to it!.

Basically, metaphorically speaking, school yard weasels Austria and Serbia had a fight and their bigger friends got involved and then everyone got involved until before you know it twenty million people were dead!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

The tension started in Serbia and Austro-Hungary, when the Archduke Franz Ferdinand was assassinated by a Serbian rebel!. germany and the rest of Europe took sides with either Serbia or Austro-Hungary, which eventually escalated into World War I!. So, yeah, blame that little Serbian so-and-so for starting the whole thing off!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

It all started when a SERBIAN (Gavrilo Pincip) assassinated a AUSTRO-HUNGARIAN (Archdukle Franz Ferdinand!. Austria-Hungary then demanded Serbia to listen to a set of demands!. Serbia modified it and Austri-Hungary said no!. Serbia called its ally Russia, which called France which called Britain!. Austria-Hungary called Germany!.
It's just that Germany had the best fighting army, and the navy and were the main pest and history is written by the victors!. At the Treaty of Versailles, Germany was the only major Central power in existence apart from Bulgaria!. The Austria-Hungarian and Ottomans had broken up!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
