The first answer is correct, she ran out of fuel and crashed, her maps were wrong and she didn't know where she was!. Her last transmission was abruptly cut short indicating the plane had crashed!. The plane wreckage found on a nearby island was found not to be the same type as hers, there were also shoes found there but they were not hers nor did they belong to her navigator but this is probably where the erroneous stories began that she had somehow survived!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

no body really knows!.!.!. she was over where she should have been but she couldn't seem to find the air field at all!.!.!. In her last known transmission at 8:43 a!.m!. Earhart broadcast "We are on the line 157 337!. We will repeat this message!. We will repeat this on 6210 kilocycles!. Wait!." However, a few moments later she was back on the same frequency (3105 kHz) with a transmission which was logged as a "questionable": "We are running on line north and south!."[105] Earhart's transmissions seemed to indicate she and Noonan believed they had reached Howland's charted position, which was incorrect by about five nautical miles

They ran out of fuel and crashed into the Pacific ocean, that part is no mystery but nobody knows exactly where they crashed since the plane hasn't been found!. Her last general location and amount of fuel are both known so it's fact that she didn't have enough fuel to make it to land even if she knew where it was!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I believe I heard once on a History Channel special about this that part of her plane may have been found on a small island, indicating that she did attempt to land, but they think the majority of it went into the ocean!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
