Question: Sword of Byzantine Emperor!?
Apparently sometime during the 1800s the Ottoman Sultan gave a jewel encrusted sword to the Tsar of Russia claiming it was the sword found on the Byzantine Emperor's corpse after the battle of Constantinople!. Does anyone have any detailed info or pictures about this sword!? I have only ever read it on wikipedia and im not sure if its true or not!.

Help would be appreciated!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

No, it is not true!. Many myths have been saved for the emperor and the way he will wake up, about him having 6 fingers etc etc!.
I haven't seen such an object the years that I'm active in Byzantine Art!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

hello

the last emperor's body was never recovered , (Constantine XI Palaiologos)

As city fell on May 29, 1453, Constantine is said to have remarked: "The city is fallen but I am alive"!. Realising that the end had come, he reportedly discarded his purple cloak (a sign of the emperor) and led his remaining soldiers into a last charge where he was killed

It is claimed by some that his corpse was identified after the battle by his purple boots, while others claim that the Turks were never able to identify his body, and that the last Byzantine emperor was very likely buried in a mass grave alongside his soldiers

as his body was never identified !.!.!. the turks could not have found a sword on it (and known it was his) !.!.!. so i guess its not a true story

- and swords for fighting would have been practical, two handed sworded

jewelled swords would have been for ceremonial purposes to signify rank !.!.!. and not likely used in battle !.!. although i guess the turks could have found it in his palace!?Www@QuestionHome@Com
