The problem is that there is a difference between making the decaration and actually being independent!.

Ignoring the 1798, 1803, 1848, 1867 rebellions, many would have the reading of the proclamation of the Republic on Easter Monday, 1916 (24th April, I think) as the date!. However, this rebellion failed as well though the people involved took part in the War of Independence!.

On 19th January 1919, with a majority of elected representatives from the November 1918 election, the first Dáil met in the Mansion House, Dublin!. That same day an ambush at Soloheadbeg in Tipperary killed two policemen!. This is the official start of the War of Independence, and the Irish parliaments count their independence from this day!.

The Treaty, whereby the British gave independence (Dominion status, same as Canada, Australia and New Zealand etc!.), was signed in December 1921!. Ireland still had a king of England as the head of state!. Though removed the kings portrait from coins, stamps etc!. unlike the other dominions, Canada etc!.

After the Civil War over the failure to become a full Republic and failure to gain the whole Island!. The loosers of the Civil War formed the opposition party Fianna Fáil!. The leader of this party de Valera introduced a new constitution in 1937 which changed the name of the country from Saorstat éireann (Irish Free State) to éire (Ireland) and removed the king from any official role!. Basically ignored the existence of the king and refused to recognise his right to have a say in the running of Ireland and replaced all his official functions with the President!.

The winners of the Civil War (having merged with other parties in the thirties) formed a coalition government with some small parties and in 1948 declared that Ireland would be a Republic!. The name didn't change, officially it is still éire, and the same constitution of 1937 is still in use!. The only difference is that we are not part of the British Commonwealth!. There is a story that the Taoiseach (the leader of the Government) made this desision because he was insulted on an official trip to Canada!. The toasted the king before the Irish President, justifying it on the grounds that both countries were in the Commonwealth, and they had a model cannon used in the Seige of Derry (a whole other question, don't go there!!!)!.

Basically, because the 1921 date didn't give Ireland any real freedom, and the 1937 and 1948 changes were more political moving than anything else, these dates are not really used!. The Irish people have a parade (was stopped until recently becuase of the North, don't go there either, a whole other question again) celebrating the 1916!. Not as a date of independence but as a date of hope/ desire/ heroic struggle etc!.

Hope that helps (personally I'd read the link one of the other anwerers gave)!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
