Hitler wanted Germany to regain its territory lost from WWI!. He wanted the same land that Germany had in the midieval age!. He wanted Germany to become a major manufacturing capital!. To do that, you need a lot of wood for burning, a lot of land to build factories, a lot of mines for metals, and a LOT of people!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Lebensraum (help·info) (German for "habitat" or literally "living space") served as a major motivation for Nazi Germany's territorial aggression!. In his book Mein Kampf, Adolf Hitler detailed his belief that the German people needed Lebensraum (for a Grossdeutschland, land, and raw materials), and that it should be taken in the East!. It was the stated policy of the Nazis to kill, deport, or enslave the Polish, Russian and other Slavic populations, whom they regarded as Untermenschen, and to repopulate the land with reinrassig Germanic peoples!. The entire urban population was to be exterminated by starvation, thus creating an agricultural surplus to feed Germany and allowing their replacement by a German upper class!.

The question is why in Hitler's vision creating an empire was a better idea than simply trading with foreign nations!?

Quite simply because he opposed capitalism, so in his view, since trade and exchange was not an option, the only thing left was conquest!.

It also comes from one of the many paradoxies of nazism!. Even though it presented itself as a pro-modernity and pro-progress ideology (admiration for technology and all), it was very much reactionary in essence!. It considered that most of the German population should work as farmers (the usual image: a man, his home, his field, his family and his rifle)!.

The lands on the East being very rich, it was a perfect place for German colonist to settle!. As Paco mentioned he was obsessed with the idea that the other countries had their colonies while Germany didn't!. But he was also obsessed with the Ostsiedlung, the medieval German expansion to the East, when the settlers and teutonic knights had destroyed the Pruss populations!. Hitler was totally obsessed with the idea that France and the UK and Netherlands had managed to control much of the world while Germany just barely organized itself into a country by 1871!. He spoke many times about the unfairness that the colonial powers were making UK rich while Germany had no colonies!.
