how did the comstock impact the settlement of the westWww@QuestionHome@Com

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker:
I have no idea why Feisty's link says "gold" when the Comstock Lode was primarily silver - historically silver - FAMOUSLY silver!. It was the first major silver strike in the U!.S!. It played a large role in the settlement of the west, as prospectors flooded to the area looking for their fortunes - or of the "east" since many of them were prospectors in the California gold rush of the previous decade!. Many other silver strikes would follow!.

EDIT: Because you didn't actually READ my link, now did you Elmyr!? Because if you HAD actually READ my link, you would have seen a discussion on the Comstock SILVER mine!.

A brief quote: "All were scratching the mountain dirt for "color" when some electrifying news came drifting over from the eastern slopes of the Sierra Nevada - some "blasted blue stuff" that had been found was actually a fabulous silver strike, the legendary Comstock Lode, probably the greatest single mineral strike in history!.

During the next year, 17,000 swarmed into the Washoe region of what is now the state of Nevada!.

"Frame shanties pitched together as if by accident - tents of canvas, of blankets of brush, of potato-sacks, and old shirts, with empty whiskey barrels for chimneys - coyote holes in the mountain-side forcibly seized and held by men - pits and shafts with smoke issuing from every crevice - piles of goods and rubbish in the hollows, on the rocks, in the mud, in the snow everywhere, scattered broadcast in pell-mell confusion!."

Please, next time READ before making comments!. And at least I don't give links to Wikipedia -- which MOST people know is totally unreliable!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
