The people of Britain were largely celtic peoples!. Your use of the term Britain is correct, the Engl came from the Angles, who arrived after the initial group of Saxons under Hengst and Horsa (you'll recognize those names from Beowulf)!. The Saxons were invited to help defend the settlements against the raids by the Scots (natives of Ireland) and the Picts (natives of Scotland)!. Vortigern, the king who had made the invitation decided not to pay them, at least not what they thought the job was worth, and they let it be known that there were easy pickings to be had on the island, and lo and behold their friends and neigbors turned up with weapons!.

The people living on the island before that had been substantially romanized by this time, at least the ones with the power!. Www@QuestionHome@Com

There were some early English tribes that existed before Rome came to the Isles, but they were pretty scattered and no big civilization!.
The Celts were a major population!.

The Saxons actually were not from England, they came over from the main continent of Europe, to loot and plunder from the Anglos!. Eventually, taking over much of England, the two tribes meshed together into a single identity!.

That's what's special about the legend of King Arthur: he's one of the first unifying leaders of England, to combine all lands and tribes into a single national entity!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
